Judgment: Arrows and Lightning: Allowing the Locusts to destroy

2Sa 22:15 And he sent out arrows^02671, and scattered them; lightning^01300, and discomfited^02000 them.

Jer 51:34 Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon hath devoured me, he hath crushed <02000> me, he hath made me an empty vessel, he hath swallowed me up like a dragon, he hath filled his belly with my delicates, he hath cast me out.

Ps 144:6 Cast forth lightning^01300, and scatter them: shoot out thine arrows^02671, and destroy <02000> them.

Ps 18:14 Yea, he sent out his arrows^02671, and scattered them; and he shot out lightnings^01300, and discomfited <02000> them.

Salvation: Lightning and Flame of Fire giving light to His people

Mt 24:27 For as the lightning^796 cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Mt 28:3 His countenance was like lightning^796, and his raiment white as snow:

Lu 11:36 If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining^796 of a candle^3088 doth give thee light.

Joh 5:35 He was a burning and a shining light^3088: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.

Re 18:23 And the light of a candle^3088 shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.

Re 21:23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light^3088 thereof.

Ex 14:20 And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these: so that the one came not near the other all the night.

Ex 3:2 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.

Ro 13:12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.

Ps 105:39 He spread a cloud for a covering; and fire to give light in the night.

Ne 9:19 Yet thou in thy manifold mercies forsookest them not in the wilderness: the pillar of the cloud departed not from them by day, to lead them in the way; neither the pillar of fire by night, to shew them light, and the way wherein they should go.

East and West, North and South: The whole body?

Ps 107:3 And gathered them out of the lands, from the east, and from the west, from the north, and from the south.

Isa 43:5 Fear not: for I am with thee: I will bring thy seed from the east, and gather thee from the west;

Lu 13:29 And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God.

Joe 2:25 And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.

Conclusion:

The Bible it seems is tying the coming of Christ to (1) the armies of God (Satan and his

ministers) who come to destroy the church body. God uses a variety of different names such as

arrows, famine, lightning, lamp, fire, locusts to point to the various attributes of God in

judgment. And these come from the east and west; a figure pointing to the very extreme of the

church. (2) By the same token God appears to identify lighting also with God’s candle that

gives light to His elect at the same time. So Christ coming as the lightning that shines from east

to west would seem to indicate that He comes to judge by unleashing the enemy to destroy and

also to save by giving light to the elect.
