| A look into some parabolic language in the Bible to see how God responds to those who exercise a literal approach to these parables. |

Does God respond favorably to those who mistake parables for literal events?
The importance of understanding the parables Mt 13:34 All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them: Ps 78:2 I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old: Mt 13:13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. Lu 21:29 And he spake to them a parable; Behold the fig tree, and all the trees; Joh 10:6 This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them. Lu 20:19 And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them.
The Raising of Lazarus Joh 11:11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth^2837; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. Mt 27:52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept^2837 arose, Lu 22:45 And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping^2837 for sorrow, Mt 25:5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. 1Co 15:51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep^2837, but we shall all be changed, 1Th 4:13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep^2837, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. 1Th 4:14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep^2837 in Jesus will God bring with him. 1Th 4:15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep^2837. 2Pe 3:4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep^2837, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. Joh 11:12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. Joh 11:13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
Nicodemus Joh 3:4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? Joh 3:12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?
Spiritual Meat Joh 4:32 But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of. Joh 4:33 Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat? Joh 4:34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.
The Pharisees and the Sabbath Mr 3:2 And they watched him, whether he would heal him on the sabbath day; that they might accuse him. Mr 3:5 And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other. Mr 3:6 And the Pharisees went forth, and straightway took counsel with the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him.
The Samaritan woman at the well Joh 4:10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. Joh 4:11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water? Joh 4:12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle? Joh 4:13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
The Parable of the cleansed Leper: Corporate Forgiveness? Lu 17:11 And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. Lu 17:12 And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off: Lu 17:13 And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. Lu 17:14 And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed. Le 14:2 This shall be the law of the leper in the day of his cleansing: He shall be brought unto the priest: Le 14:3 And the priest shall go forth out of the camp; and the priest shall look, and, behold, if the plague of leprosy be healed in the leper; Le 14:4 Then shall the priest command to take for him that is to be cleansed two birds alive and clean, and cedar wood, and scarlet, and hyssop: Lu 17:15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, Lu 17:16 And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. Lu 17:17 And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? Lu 17:18 There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. Lu 17:19 And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.
Conclusion: When it comes to the Bible, it seems God does not respond favorably to those who confuse parables with shadows. We do read that we are to compare spiritual things with spiritual. So today, when we consider a literal five months of hell on earth with earthquakes, unburied bones etc. Do we really have Biblical support for this teaching? Or have we developed doctrines with what appears to be parabolic shadows?
